The Many Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
The concept of “cosmetic” treatment can be misleading. Often times, people view anything cosmetic as frivolous or unnecessary. The thing is, that’s not always the case. There are several cosmetic dental treatments that are also restorative and preventative. One such case is with orthodontics. How can orthodontics benefit you?
More Than Just a Pretty Smile
The most obvious benefit of orthodontic treatment is that it results in a straight smile. Ortho serves many other purposes, though, including:
- It corrects your bite. If your bite isn’t properly aligned, you could have trouble chewing effectively, slight speech impediments, and even jaw pain. Orthodontics shift your teeth into the most desirable position, allowing you to eat and speak without pain.
- It prevents decay and disease. When your teeth are crooked and overcrowded, they’re hard to clean. If one tooth even slightly overlaps another, flossing becomes difficult, leaving plaque and tartar to build on the teeth and cause decay. After you finish orthodontic treatment, your teeth are properly spaced and easy to clean.
- It can correct TMJ disorders. Misaligned teeth lead to a misaligned jaw, and if your jaw is misaligned, you’re more likely to suffer from temporomandibular joint disorders. TMD can cause facial pain, neck and shoulder pain, difficulty eating and speaking, and even lock jaw. Orthodontics align everything necessary to help you live comfortably.
If you’re one of my patients who have considered orthodontics only to disregard it as “optional,” you’ve got to change the way you think. Like other “cosmetic” treatments (like crowns and veneers), orthodontics play an important role in keeping your smile healthy and happy.
